SCIL Success Story

M.R. Wins with SCIL

MR is a twenty-three-year-old youth consumer living with Schizophrenia. MR is one of five female siblings. Three of MR’s younger siblings are also living with schizophrenia. Although MR’s mother has some community supports in place, it has been especially challenging for MR to finish high school. MR stopped going to school due to intense mental health episodes and several hospitalizations. In recent years, MR shared with IL Specialist that she finally got the right medications at the right doses and has enrolled to complete her GED studies. MR was frustrated with using her cell phone because she and all of her siblings had to share one computer. IL Specialist reminded MR about SCIL’s computer loan program. MR was so happy that she screamed. IL Specialist provided MR with her very own laptop computer. Today, MR completed her GED studies and is now enrolled in Manatee Technical College.

He recently enrolled in a home buyer assistance program. Upon successful completion of the program, he would receive down-payment assistance. Alfredo’s Success Story

Young man with a bright blue shirt sitting at a computer in the computer classroom.

Alfredo’s initial contact with Suncoast Center for Independent Living was via our Mobility Program in search of medical equipment. After receiving his medical equipment, he learned about the SCIL Transition Program. Alfredo expressed interest in the computer skills classes offered and set an appointment to talk to the Independent Living Coordinator about the program. It was discovered that he had an interest in computers but possessed very little knowledge and experience working with computers. He enrolled in a computer class in June 2013 and over the course of four months, Alfredo became a daily fixture in the computer lab. He has made considerable progress moving from computer novice to his current project, learning PowerPoint in order to make a presentation for his church’s holiday celebration. The strides Alfredo has made are truly inspiring. His next goal is to enroll in our GED prep course.
